Everyone talks about starting new hobbies in January. New year, new goals, new planner that gets used for about twelve days.

But honestly? Spring might be the best time of all.

By April, the days are longer, the sun is finally doing its job again, and people start feeling that strange burst of energy known as motivation. Suddenly it seems reasonable to learn something new.

Enter: guitar or ukulele.

The ukulele is possibly the friendliest instrument ever invented. It only has four strings, it’s small enough to bring anywhere, and even your first chord already sounds like you’re on vacation.

The guitar has a bit more drama—in a good way. Learn just a couple chords and suddenly you’re halfway to playing campfire songs, classic rock, or that one song everyone somehow knows the words to.

Another great thing about starting in the spring is timing. If you begin now, by the time summer rolls around you’ll already know enough chords to play outside, at a picnic, or around a campfire—which is basically the natural habitat of both the guitar and the ukulele.

And beginners progress faster than they expect. Within a few weeks you go from “Which string is this?” to actually playing recognizable songs.

So if you’ve been thinking about trying something new, spring is a great time to start.

Worst case scenario: you learn a few chords.

Best case scenario: you become the person who casually brings a ukulele to a picnic and somehow makes it look cool.
